Many people ask, “What is Kimberlin Gray?” It is definitely unique – and being named Amanda in the late 70’s certainly didn’t give me a unique moniker to begin with. So when deciding on a name for my photography business, I wanted to stand out in the crowd! I love meaningful names - Kimberlin is my daughter’s middle name and Gray is my son’s middle name, both family names. I thought they sounded very nice together and fit into the “different” category without being too difficult to remember.
Now that you know why I named my studio Kimberlin Gray Photography, you might be wondering about the person behind the camera!
I love to read, am addicted to Coca-Cola and am a huge chocolate nut. My favorite are Hershey’s Treasures. I could seriously eat an entire bag.
I am somewhat of a techno-geek, although my husband does have me beat in that area. My family thinks that my laptop is an extension of my fingertips, I am sure. I have yet to get a Blackberry or iPhone, but I’m sure it’s not far off…
I really wish I could be more domestic, but cooking and cleaning my house often takes a back seat to surfing Facebook or processing photos. If I won the lottery, the first thing I’d buy myself is a lifetime maid service. Honestly. I just hate unloading the dishwasher and folding laundry, especially matching up the socks, is the bane of my existence.
Some people would describe me as Type-A but my slight perfectionism (ha ha!) comes in handy sometimes, so I tend to think it’s a good thing overall.
I’m a bit of a talker…okay, that’s not true. I could talk the ears off of corn. I sat down to write this description and thought to myself, “I have nothing to say.” Ha!
My mother has called me “fickle” but I just like to think that I embrace change! In my lifetime, I’ve been a busboy(girl?), a hostess, a drugstore cashier, a daycare provider, a convenience store clerk, a preschool teacher, a nanny, an elementary school teacher, and a technology specialist. Now, I’m a photographer – and I feel like all my previous jobs have prepared me for this one. I have experience working with children (and their parents!), business skills, technical knowledge, and a keen understanding of customer service. I love interacting different families and the challenge of creating something new every time I take out my camera.
In my photography, I love bright colors, sparkling eyes, and silhouettes. I also love to capture “true” moments. I am always thrilled to capture the shot...you know, the one where everyone is looking right at the camera and smiling perfectly? But, sometimes the shot is not nearly as good as the candid, off-the-cuff capture of children playing together, mother and daughter in an embrace, or that sweet baby face all scrunched up in a wail. Sometimes the best photos are not the ones you or I expect –and I love those most.
